West Chester Rams are in Division 2 World Series College Baseball!

The first game will be played in Cary N.C and on the web at 5 PM, May 24, Sunday. They got in decisive fashion with a 14-0 victory over Mercyhurst. Last year, they just barely missed this series, and I posted about it here. They last reached the national tournament playoff in 2006.

RIP: West Chester’s WCOJ radio station

WCOJ, West Chester’s radio’s source for local news and talk, is no more. It is dead. Read the article here:

http://thatblueyak.blogspot.com/2008/10/wcoj-is-forever-gone-closed-chester.html

It has been acquired by the Holy Spirit Radio, which will soon be broadcasting Catholic programming 24/7.

Click on http://www.wcoj.com to see that it is now Holy Spirit Radio.

The good news is that the old wcoj now seems to have resurrected itself as http://brandywineradio.com which sounds a lot like the old wcoj. It plays classical music from 6 PM to 6 AM, and Contemporary Pop from 6AM to 6PM and has the same local news streaming on the internet. They still have Ron’s Swap Shop where you can swap for an inflatable Santa Claus on an airplane with presents inside, snow plows, a 2 year old shepherd/chow dog, and old cheap cars. http://www.brandywineradio.com/swap.html

Philadelphia freedom on Philadelphia Septa Regional Rail

It used to be that if I did not get to the train station by midnight, my transportation would turn into a pumpkin and I would turn into a Philadelphia homeless person for the night.  I frantically had to run to the train station to use my anywhere trail pass or stay the night in the train station! The last R5 train out to Exton from Philadelphia left Center City around midnight. However – no longer! Septa just added an extra late night train that leaves from 30th Street Station at 11:49 PM or  12:49 AM or 1:49 AM on Friday and Saturday nights http://www.septa.com/service/sched/r5s_sat.html. So this is wonderful!

Septa is celebrating this new Philadelphia Freedom by offering free evening regional rail travel this weekend, Sept 19 and 20th after 6:30 PM to all passengers!

PHILADELPHIA, Sept 17, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX/ — Free Rides for Passengers after 6:30 PM on Friday, Saturday Evening
SEPTA will offer free travel after 6:30 p.m. on all of its Regional Rail Lines this weekend to commemorate its new late-night service.
This special promotion will provide passengers with free rides on all trains scheduled to arrive and depart Center City Philadelphia exclusively on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 19 & 20 after 6:30 p.m. each day.
SEPTA’s free promotional fare will allow commuters to travel to events in the region using new late-night train service now operating on select routes. Regular SEPTA train fares will be in effect prior to 6:30 p.m.
SEPTA has implemented several initiatives to enhance service and accommodate increased passenger ridership levels, including adding extra late-night trains on the R5 Paoli-Thorndale, R6 Norristown and R7 Trenton Lines on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Bomb found in West Chester Parking Garage

Here is the National Terror Alert .

The Mostellers garage is about six blocks from my house in downtown West Chester, PA that I used to park in when I was a member of the Y. There is a YMCA with a day care center across the street, so I am glad that Homeland Security was able to detonate them safely.

Here is an eyewitness account by the awfully brave blue yak.

West Chester shopping (online and offline)

Malena’s is one of Hannah’s favorite Downtown boutiques. Malena also has a fantastic web page:

http://www.malenasboutique.com/

The Chester County bookstore is having a 25% off sale on almost all books  June 22-28. So this is a good time to stock up for books to read on the beach and support your independent local book store while paying Barnes and Noble and Border’s prices! (still not as cheap as Amazon.com however). Your conscience will feel better, and you will still have the cash.

And don’t forget the West Chester Grower’s Market on Saturday Morning:

http://www.westchestergrowersmarket.com/

We have a deal with a local farmer that if we buy all our fruits and vegetables in January that he will give us lots and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables! So we are enjoying a lot of local food with no inflation.

Finally – our music festival is coming up:

Farm Party!

Gretchen had larengitis this weekend so she couldn’t come to a party celebrating the Lisa and Ike Kirschner’s new farm! Ben and I went and had a great time – there was a lot of homemade food and drink and a band. The Kirschner’s sell fruits and vegetables at farmer’s markets – such as the West Chester Farmer Market that just re-opened last Saturday morning. The Kirschners have employed Gretchen and Sam and Josh at various times, and we joined their club where you pay them a lump sum in January and they provide their fantastic fruits and vegetables for you every week from June 1 to November! I am looking forward to that!

Lisa is also a talented writer and she wrote a My Turn column for Newsweek that you must read here – Farming as a Labor of Love. They also have a very organized son – Jay, who is a good friend of Ben’s. Jay and Ben used to be in a homeschool co-op together. He had the cleanest bedroom ever for a thirteen year old! Jay was the photographer for the party. Being on a farm reminded me of Kansas.
