Jennifer for Chester County Judge

“To the Moon” endorses Jennifer W. Levy-Tatum, Esq. as a judge for the Chester County Court of Common Pleas. She’s a woman. She’s black. She’s a Christian. She’s a Democrat. She is also my friend and a good person!  Jennifer is a member of my church – Cornerstone Christian Fellowship Church in West Chester.

  1. According to the newspaper this morning (Philadelphia Inquirer, 05/08, A22) – both the candidates have cross-filed so both of their names appear in the Democratic Primary ballot and the Republican Primary ballot. If one of the candidates (Democrat Jennifer W. Levy-Tatum or Republican David F Bortner) win both primaries, they will have have won the election on May 15 – otherwise they will face off again in the fall election.

  2. Jennifer won in the Democratic Primary:

JUDGE OF THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS
Vote for not more than 1
    JENNIFER W. LEVY-TATUM . . . . . . 13,066 79.00
    DAVID F. BORTNER . . . . . . . . 3,442 20.81
    WRITE-IN. . . . . . . . . . . 32 .19

but lost in the Republican Primary:

JUDGE OF THE COURT OF COMMON PLEAS
Vote for not more than 1
    JENNIFER W. LEVY-TATUM . . . . . . 15,199 41.23
    DAVID F. BORTNER . . . . . . . . 21,604 58.60
    WRITE-IN. . . . . . . . . . . 61 .17

So they will run against each other again in the fall. This is very predictable, because before you vote in the primary, someone hands you a sample Republican or Democratic Ballot to use as a template.

One good sign is that, if you add the Democratic and Republican votes together – Jennifer got more total votes!

It’s too bad that Ms. Tatum is the Democratic representative for the Chester County Court of Common Pleas. She will most likely be perceived exactly as her “To the Moon” supporter’s describe her; “She’s a woman. She’s black. She’s a Christian. She’s a Democrat.”

Is that why the “To the Moon” group is asking Chester County to support a candidate? Becasue she’s black? Or a woman? That is extremely shallow-minded thinking and it is also what the Republican candidates want from their Democratic opposition.

As a Democrat, I am extremely disturbed that we would have even ran with such an endorsement front and center as if that was the best that could have been thought up. What if we said “vote for Joe Johns, he’s white, he’s a man, and he’s a Christian?” I can just hear the news reports declaring anti-semitism already. Why is it alright to promote being black, but acknowledging any other race is “offensive?”

  4. The reason you should vote for Jennifer is not that she is a black woman who loves Jesus. The reason you should vote for her is that she is compassionate, a scholar, and an untraditional woman who will give a voice and an ear to all constituents. And that she loves Jesus. And that she is my friend. Other facts about her is that she knows Spanish and she teaches law classes to Spanish speaking students at Eastern University.

  5. It looks like Jennifer Levy-Tatum lost to David Bortner – 60% to 40% 😦

    WRITE-IN. . . . . . . . . . . 57 .07
