Clapham Sect and William Wilberforce

William Wilberforce (1759- 1833) was a British politician who, after years and years of trying, made slavery against the law in Great Britain. There is a movie about his life –Amazing Grace. It is a good movie that is more talk-oriented than action-oriented. One detail that was not emphasized enough was the influence that the Clapham Sect (1790-1830) had on his life and work. If this small group of influential friends from his Anglican church had not been meeting together and encouraging each other – much of the social reforms of nineteenth century England, maybe even the abolition of slavery, would not have occurred!
