The cost of the presidential election: half a billion in 2007

..and this is *already* greater than  the total cost of presidential elections before 2004. In 2007, 582.5 million dollars was raised and 481.2 was spent. And the election is not until November 2008! Election spending went over 100 million in 1984, 200 million in 1996, 300 million in 2000, and 700 million in 2004. It is projected to go over a billion in 2008.
